World Cup: It demoralised them – Julius Aghahowa reveals why Ghana fell 3-2 to Portugal

Former Super Eagles striker, Julius Aghahowa has slammed the centre referee in the Portugal vs Ghana clash for awarding a penalty to the Europeans without consulting the video assistant referee.

Cristiano Ronaldo converted the penalty to put Portugal in the lead during their 3-2 win over Ghana Thursday evening.

Aghahowa, who was on punditry duty on Brila FM during the game, did not see any reason the referee should have given an outright spot kick without checking the monitor.

“The penalty awarded to Portugal demoralized Ghana. The referee should have gone to the monitor to confirm that it was indeed a penalty. He didn’t and that affected the Ghanaians,” Aghahowa said.

“The penalty is contestable. My problem with that is the ref didn’t even go to check.”

Meanwhile, Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyang, has also criticised the referee for awarding the spot kick which he described as very soft.
