Bale, who captains Wales to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, scored from the spot to earn the Europeans a 1-1 draw against the USA in their opening game.

Bale has remained crucial for Wales despite his lack of game time at club level.

The former Tottenham star now plays for MLS side LAFC, but Premier League legend, Souness is concerned that the forward may have lost focus on football and may not be able to help his country’s team in the way he has done previously.

“I think for Wales to do well, Gareth Bale has to have moments of real quality,” the Liverpool legend told ITV.

“He’s a complete mystery to me. At 33, I think maybe he shouldn’t be at Real Madrid but he should still be a big player at a big club.

“His last couple of years at Real Madrid were a joke for someone of that quality.”
