Oleksandr Usyk beats Tyson Fury to win undisputed heavyweight championship

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk fought at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh to determine who would be the first undisputed world heavyweight champion in 25 years and the first of the four-belt era. Usyk prevailed by a split decision to unify the WBA, WBO, WBC, and IBF world belts.

Fury was on the brink of being stopped in the ninth round as he received a standing count and Usyk added the WBC title to his WBA, IBF and WBO belts after earning victory with scores of 115-112, 113-114, 114-113 in Saudi Arabia.

In the startling ninth, Usyk appeared to have Fury standing up, and that was when the momentum changed. The Ukrainian struck Fury’s jaw with a hard left hook. His entire 6 feet 9 inches tall physique shook, causing him to rock across the ring.

With more crunching punches, Usyk teased him, slamming Fury into one rope set after another. Anger twisted through the strands. He leaned against the rigging, struggling to stay upright.

Evidently convinced that Fury had been kept up by the ropes, referee Mark Nelson dashed in at that point and gave a 10-count. That choice might have been fatal. To stop the round and prevent Fury from being attacked again, the bell rings.

At the start of the fight, Fury appeared dialled into the best form we’ve seen from him for some time.

Boxing has been waiting 25 years to crown a new undisputed world heavyweight champion since the heady days’ of Lewis’ reign. Fury and Usyk had amassed all the major world titles between them and were finally fighting to decide the first undisputed heavyweight king of the four-belt era.
